The Catholic Commission for Justice and Peace (CCJP) of the Malawi Conference of Catholic Bishops has released a comprehensive public statement titled “Jubilee 2025: CCJP Public Statement on Justice, Peace & The Future of Malawi.”

A Jubilee of Hope and Responsibility

As the Catholic Church worldwide observes the Jubilee Year 2025—a sacred time of renewal, hope, and restoration—the CCJP joins in reflection on our nation’s journey toward liberation, economic justice, environmental care, and support for the vulnerable.

Critical National Challenges

The statement addresses five key areas requiring urgent attention:

1. Economic Hardships and Cost of Living

With inflation around 30% and over 60% of Malawians living on less than $2.15 per day, the CCJP calls for policies to stabilize the economy, ensure affordable farm inputs, and create safety nets for low-income families.

2. Political Violence and Threats to Peace

CCJP condemns recent incidents of political violence and intimidation, calling for peaceful dialogue and an end to hate speech as we approach the September 2025 elections.

3. Corruption and Governance

Highlighting Malawi’s concerning ranking of 34/100 on Transparency International’s corruption index, the statement calls for strengthened anti-corruption frameworks and accountability at all levels.

4. Natural Resources Management

The statement addresses ongoing concerns about mining sector mismanagement and calls for transparent, sustainable development that benefits local communities.

5. Electoral Preparedness

With voter registration at only 65% of eligible citizens, CCJP emphasizes the importance of civic participation and credible elections.

Recommendations for Unity and Progress

The CCJP calls upon:

Government Leaders: Lead with integrity and prioritize the welfare of citizens over partisan interests.

Political Parties: Embrace issue-based campaigns and reject violence, working together for national progress after elections.

Religious and Traditional Leaders: Continue providing moral guidance and fostering peace in communities.

Citizens: Practice responsible citizenship through informed participation, accountability, and unity beyond tribal and regional differences.

A Message of Hope

“As we celebrate Jubilee 2025, CCJP calls upon every Malawian to reflect on our shared duty to build a just and peaceful nation. Jubilee is a time of renewal—a time to restore what has been broken, to forgive debts and wrongs, and to return to the path of righteousness.”

The statement concludes with a blessing: “May God bless Malawi, and bless us all as we strive for justice & peace.”
