Malawi Catholic Bishops Convene for 2026 First Annual Plenary Assembly

Catholic Secretariat, Lilongwe – 27th January 2026 – The Malawi Conference of Catholic Bishops (MCCB) has commenced its first annual plenary assembly for 2026 at the Catholic Secretariat in Lilongwe. The week-long meeting, running from Monday, 26th January to Friday, 30th January, brings together all Catholic Bishops in Malawi alongside the Apostolic Nuncio to Malawi and Zambia, His Excellency Most Reverend GianLuca Perici.

The plenary assembly provides a platform for the Bishops to discuss key matters affecting the Church and the faithful in Malawi. Key issues on the agenda include:

  • A study session on the Synod on Synodality;
  • Updates from national Catholic organizations, including the National Laity Council, Catholic Women Association, and Catholic Men Association.
  • Progress reports from the Secretariat’s Pastoral, Social Development, Finance, Investments, and Administration Directorates.
  • Matters relating to priestly formation in seminaries and the development of future clergy.
  • Reports from national Catholic associations such as Association of Diocesan Catholic Clergy in Malawi (ADCCOM), Association of Women in Religious Institutes in Malawi (AWRIM), Association of Men Religious in Malawi (AMRIM), as well as updates on Church development projects.
  • General progress reports from the Catholic University of Malawi (CUNIMA) and DMI – St. John the Baptist University.

Secretary General of MCCB, Very Rev. Fr. Valeriano Mtseka, has called on Catholics and people of goodwill to keep the Bishops in their prayers as they deliberate on these important issues.

The plenary assembly continues throughout the week, providing a key forum for strategic planning and pastoral guidance for the Church in Malawi.
