LILONGWE, Malawi — The Catholic University of Malawi successfully inaugurated its St. Thomas More Campus in Nanjiri within the Archdiocese of Lilongwe, marking a new step in the Catholic Church’s efforts to expand access to higher education in the country.
The inauguration ceremony on 6 March 2026 was attended by bishops from across Malawi, the Councillor of the Apostolic Nunciature of Malawi and Zambia, Monsignor Dario Pavisa, and the Minister of Education, Science and Technology, Bright Msaka.
Speaking during the ceremony, the Chancellor of the university, Right Reverend Martin Mtumbuka, Bishop of the Diocese of Karonga and President of the Malawi Conference of Catholic Bishops (MCCB), said the Church remains committed to investing in education as a way of building human capital and supporting national development.

Bishop Mtumbuka said the new campus aims to promote both academic excellence and spiritual formation, helping students deepen their faith while preparing them to serve society with integrity.
In his remarks, Monsignor Pavisa hailed the Catholic Church in Malawi for its continued contribution to education and social development.

Minister Msaka also commended the Church for establishing the Lilongwe campus, saying the initiative will contribute to the country’s economic growth. He pledged the government’s continued support to ensure the university fulfils its mission of providing quality higher education.
The St. Thomas More Campus was first launched on 20 June 2022 by His Grace George Desmond Tambala, Archbishop of the Archdiocese of Lilongwe and construction was completed in 2025.
