Malawi bishop echoes Pope Leo XIV’s call for responsible communication

Blantyre, Malawi — The Bishop Emeritus of the Catholic Diocese of Mangochi, Right Reverend Alessandro Pagani, has called on communicators to use modern media responsibly and truthfully in order to spread the Gospel and contribute to the salvation of souls.

Speaking on Sunday, 17 May 2026, during the national celebration of the 60th World Day of Social Communications held at Mary Queen of Peace Chikapa Parish in the Archdiocese of Blantyre, Bishop Pagani reflected on the growing influence of communication technologies in today’s world.

He echoed Pope Leo XIV’s message for this year’s celebration themed, “Preserving Human Voices and Faces.”

Bishop Pagani noted that modern communication tools have transformed the world into “one village,” enabling people across nations to connect and share information with ease.

“For this reason, those who share information must always communicate truthfully and avoid spreading false messages, especially when proclaiming the Good News of Jesus Christ,” Bishop Pagani said.

Referring to the Holy Father’s message, the bishop emphasized the need to preserve human dignity, authenticity and truth in communication, especially in an era increasingly shaped by digital technologies.

“Christ came among us, and we continue to share the message He received from the Father,” he said, urging Catholic communicators to remain faithful to the Gospel in their work.

The bishop further encouraged communicators to recognize the spiritual dimension of their vocation, saying responsible communication can become an instrument for evangelization and salvation.

“We also need to be responsible enough in the way we communicate so that, through our words and actions, we may help bring salvation to many people,” he added.

The celebration brought together Church communicators, clergy, religious and lay faithful from across the Archdiocese of Blantyre and beyond to commemorate the Church’s annual day dedicated to reflecting on the role of media and communication in evangelization.

In his remarks, Rev. Fr. Patrick Kamba, National Coordinator for Social Communications and Research at the Malawi Conference of Catholic Bishops (MCCB), said the celebration carries deep significance for the Church as it coincides with Ascension Sunday.

“It is the day we commemorate the Ascension of our Lord Jesus Christ, who physically returned to the Father while leaving behind a mission for the Church — the mission to spread the Good News,” Fr. Kamba said.

He added that the celebration is particularly important for communicators and those working in the communications industry, as they are called to carry out their work guided by the principles and teachings of the Church and with responsibility, truth and faithfulness to the values of the Gospel.

Felix Tambulasi, Commissioner General of the Malawi Revenue Authority, who attended the event, also underscored the importance of responsible communication in society and within the Church, urging fellow Catholic faithful to be responsible and truthful when communicating.

The celebration also coincided with the fifth anniversary of Kuwala FM, the evangelization radio station of the Archdiocese of Blantyre, which was established in February 2021.
